Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is one of the most common spices and medicinal plants, widely used in daily life. Beyond its distinctive pungent flavor in cooking, ginger contains bioactive compounds such as gingerol, shogaol, and essential oils. These provide health benefits, including aiding digestion, boosting immunity, reducing inflammation, and preventing colds.
Ginger is commonly consumed in two forms: fresh ginger and dried ginger.
At room temperature: Keep ginger in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight. It lasts about 5–7 days.
In the refrigerator: Wrap ginger in paper or breathable plastic bags and store it in the fridge’s vegetable compartment. It stays fresh for 2–3 weeks.
Freezing: Wash, slice, or grind ginger, then store it in airtight containers or ice cube trays. This method can preserve ginger for several months while maintaining its flavor.
Airtight packaging: After drying, ginger should be stored in sealed containers to prevent mold.
Dry and cool conditions: Avoid direct sunlight and humid environments.
Long-term storage: Vacuum-sealed dried ginger can retain its quality and aroma for 6 months to 1 year.
With proper storage, both fresh and dried ginger maintain their distinctive aroma and nutritional value, serving culinary as well as medicinal needs.
